what makes the internet so popular?

it for one, isn't about being able to browse a world of information - nor is it because we have less fears of unleashing what we truly think about certain things. it's about being able to be the person you really are. people can spend a life time hiding the truest of their thoughts and feelings, but online - people can be who they really are without having to suffer the consequences of the social norms in society. its up for debate, what's true and what's false about personality - whether the one we have online is the real one or is it the one in person. personality for one, does not naturally deviate greatly in one person's lifetime. so who you are, is who you are. the person we appear to be online is a part of ourselves, not necessarily the avatar of us but the side of us that isn't socially accepted. you know how its like, to hear a friend say something so absurd you want to knock them out and cut off the friendship. but you can't do that, at least not "in real life". not in face-to-face interaction. that friend probably knows lots of other friends, including some of your other friends - potential friends, mates, coworkers, bosses - etc. you wouldn't want them to bad mouth you now .. do you? on the net, it is easy to quickly bitch someone out and never talk to them again. easier than 1+1. chances are, they don't know your friends - hell they're probably on the other side of the world. even if they did know you, you're just another internet user, less you disclose your full name to them. so why do we allow people we don't even know grief us? give us confidence? guidance? because they may be the wiser [or not] because someone other than your group of friends who you don't trust to tell you the truth would not lie to you [or not] because behind these avatars are real people too.

what's left unspoken,
leaves a friendship broken.
